Unlocking Genius:
How Classical Education Fosters Critical Thinking in Our Kids!

Hey there, amazing moms! 🌟 Have you ever watched your child tackle a problem or debate a point with passion, and thought to yourself, “Wow, they’re really thinking critically!”? If so, you’re witnessing the magic of critical thinking in action! One of the best ways to nurture this essential skill is through classical education. Today, let’s dive into the foundational principles of classical education and explore how it cultivates critical thinking, along with some fun tips you can apply at home!

What is Classical Education?

At its core, classical education is a time-tested approach to learning that focuses on three stages: the Trivium. These stages – Grammar, Logic, and Rhetoric – are designed to develop students’ intellectual abilities progressively and deeply.

  1. Grammar Stage (Elementary years): This stage is all about foundational knowledge. Kids learn the “who, what, when, where” of subjects, gathering information and facts. Think of it as building a treasure chest of knowledge!
  2. Logic Stage (Middle school years): Here, students begin to make connections between ideas and understand the “how” and “why.” They start to analyze and question, which lays the groundwork for critical thinking.
  3. Rhetoric Stage (High school years): In this final stage, students learn to articulate their thoughts clearly and persuasively. They synthesize their knowledge and engage in meaningful discussions, developing their unique voices and perspectives.

How Classical Education Fosters Critical Thinking

Now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s explore how this approach specifically nurtures critical thinking skills:

  1. Encouraging Inquiry: Classical education thrives on asking questions! When kids are encouraged to dig deeper and ask “why” or “how,” they become active participants in their learning. This habit of inquiry teaches them that learning is a journey, not just a destination.

Tip for Moms: Foster a culture of curiosity at home! During dinner, ask open-ended questions about their day or what they’re learning. For example, “What was the most interesting thing you learned today?” or “Why do you think that character made that choice?”

  1. Socratic Discussions: The Socratic method is a hallmark of classical education, where dialogue leads to deeper understanding. Kids learn to articulate their thoughts and challenge assumptions in a respectful way.

Tip for Moms: Organize family debates or discussions on age-appropriate topics. Choose a book or movie and ask, “What would you have done differently?” This encourages them to think critically about different viewpoints!

  1. Connecting Ideas: As students progress through the Trivium, they learn to connect various subjects and ideas. This interdisciplinary approach helps them see the bigger picture and understand complex concepts.

Tip for Moms: Engage in projects that combine subjects. For example, if your child is studying plants in science, why not read a related story in literature and discuss how plants are portrayed? This will help them make connections and think critically about what they learn!

  1. Problem-Solving: Classical education emphasizes logic and reasoning, teaching children to approach problems systematically. They learn to break down complex issues into manageable parts.

Tip for Moms: Encourage problem-solving at home! Set up puzzles or brain teasers, or give them real-life scenarios to navigate. For instance, “If we have $20 to spend on groceries, how can we create the healthiest meal possible?”

  1. Reflective Thinking: Finally, classical education promotes self-reflection. Kids learn to assess their own thought processes and understand their own biases.

Tip for Moms: Create a “reflection time” at the end of the week. Ask them to share what they learned, what surprised them, and how they can apply it in the future. This will help them develop a habit of thoughtful reflection!

Conclusion

Moms, classical education offers a powerful framework for developing critical thinking skills in our children. By embracing the principles of inquiry, discussion, connection, problem-solving, and reflection, we can help our kids become not just learners but thinkers! So let’s roll up our sleeves and get excited about nurturing their minds. After all, the world needs more thinkers, problem solvers, and innovators!

The Giver Book Reviw
The Giver By Lois Lowry Review (Written By: Ava McCoy)

Synopsis:

The Giver is a book set in a futuristic-dystopian seemingly utopian world. There is no divorce, no war, no orphans, no political disputes. Everything is perfect. Or so it seems. The people of each community live in these climate-controlled bubbles where the sun doesn’t shine and it doesn’t rain. The government controls every aspect of people's lives. Who marries who, who gets what children, who does what job. There is no color (to remove unnecessary decision making), and limited feelings (to prevent anyone from getting out of control), no books (except for the dictionary for more precise language and the rule book), and no music. And no one seems to be aware of this. It’s just part of life. Jonas is about to turn 12 and he, along with every other almost-12 year old, is about to find out what their future careers will be. When Jonas receives his assignment, The Receiver, his whole world is turned upside down. The Receiver's job is to retain the memories of the before, of our world. When Jonas starts receiving these memories, he begins to see behind the curtain of his “perfect community”. And he wants everyone else in his community to see what he sees, feel what he feels. Jonas and his mentor, The Giver, devise a plan to help the community and potentially save someone that Jonas has come to love very much.

Review:

I didn’t know what to expect when I picked up this book. To say it plainly, The Giver is one of the most thought-provoking books I’ve ever read. Dystopian books are always interesting to read but this one stands out because of how incomprehensible the concepts are. Almost anyone can imagine war, hunger, political disruption, etc. But not many people (including myself) can quite comprehend the thought of a “perfect world”.  Especially not the part where everything about my life is being controlled. I was astonished at how the inhabitants of the communities simply accepted this fact. At how incognizant everyone is. It made me very sad that individuality is discouraged in the community. Reading about how the children were grouped together in certain ways and mostly separated by age and how they were numbered made me almost angry. More than anything this book was very sobering in the way that I realized how lucky we are to have all the little things that we normally take for granted.

I really enjoyed reading about this world through the eyes of Jonas. He’s very relatable and insightful for his age. The little trio of Jonas, Asher, and Fiona was absolutely adorable and it was refreshing to see a friend group that had each other’s backs. Jonas’ friend Asher was one of my favorites as he reminds me of my own brother a bit. It was interesting to see these young people grow into their place in society and then Jonas realizing how messed up the whole system is. Watching Jonas’ heart break for his friends and his community was so sobering. I won’t say much else for fear of spoiling the plot, however I really appreciate this book for a fresh view of what the world could potentially look like one day. This is a great book to introduce tweens to the deeper, thought provoking concepts that dystopian books normally present. The language that the book is written in is simple enough to process but mature enough for high-schoolers to enjoy.

Quick Book Notes:

Age Recommendation: 12+

Romance/Sexual Content: As Jonas approaches puberty he begins to notice his friend Fiona romantically.

Profanity/Rude Language: None

Religious/Spiritual Content: No specific religion is mentioned. There is a “ceremony of release” for senior citizens before they’re euthanized via injection.

Drug Usage: Jonas’ mother gives him a pill that prevents him from having attractions/arousal.

Violence: As Jonas receives more memories from the past he experiences broken limbs, a war scene in which a dying soldier begs for water, and “releasing” which is euthanization via an injection that occurs at least three times throughout the book.

Happy learning, everyone! 🌟✨

However, delving into the pages of classical works offers us a wealth of knowledge, insight, and pleasure that remains relevant across time and cultures. Here, we explore several compelling reasons why reading classical literature should be an integral part of our literary journey.

1. Timeless Themes Resonating Across Generations

One of the most captivating aspects of classical literature is its exploration of universal themes—love, sacrifice, betrayal, ambition, and morality. Works from authors like Homer, Shakespeare, and Dostoevsky reflect struggles and triumphs that transcend their historical context. For instance, the emotional turmoil of forbidden love in "Romeo and Juliet" resonates just as deeply today as it did in the 16th century. By engaging with these stories, we can examine the human condition in all its complexity, finding echoes of our own lives and experiences within their pages.

2. A Window into History and Culture

Classical literature provides a unique lens through which we can understand the societal norms, values, and conflicts of past eras. Reading works such as "The Iliad" or "Pride and Prejudice" not only entertains but also helps us grasp the historical and cultural contexts in which they were written. This understanding can be crucial for recognizing the roots of many contemporary issues, enriching our perspective on the world today. By immersing ourselves in the narratives and viewpoints of earlier societies, we cultivate a deeper appreciation for the complexities of human history.

3. Enhancing Vocabulary and Language Skills

Classic literature is often revered for its rich language and eloquent prose. Engaging with these texts can significantly enhance our vocabulary and writing skills. Authors like Jane Austen and Charles Dickens remind us of the beauty of well-crafted sentences and thoughtful dialogue. As we encounter unfamiliar words or complex sentence structures, we not only broaden our lexicon but also improve our analytical skills. The more we read, the more adept we become at expressing our thoughts and feelings in precise and evocative language.

4. Moral and Ethical Reflection

Many classic literature works present intricate moral dilemmas that challenge characters to confront their values and beliefs. Exploring these dilemmas—whether it’s Hamlet’s indecision or Gatsby's relentless pursuit of the American Dream—compels us to reflect on our own ethical choices. The moral quandaries posed in these texts spur meaningful discussions about right and wrong, pushing us to evaluate our principles and the consequences of our actions. In a world often mired in ambiguity, classic literature serves as a guiding light for navigating complex moral landscapes.

5. Cultivating Empathy and Understanding

Stories allow us to step into someone else’s shoes, and classical literature is a treasure trove of diverse human experiences. By engaging with characters from different backgrounds and eras, we cultivate empathy and a broader understanding of the world. The struggles of the characters in "The Grapes of Wrath" or the resilience of those in "Things Fall Apart" can deepen our awareness of social justice issues and the plight of marginalized communities. Empathy fostered through literature is vital in today’s increasingly divided society, helping us to communicate across cultural and ideological divides.

6. Engagement with Complex Narratives

Classical literature often presents multilayered plots and sophisticated narrative structures, inviting readers to actively interpret and analyze the text. This engagement sharpens our critical thinking skills, as we decipher symbolism, explore character motivations, and consider the broader implications of the story. Unlike many modern narratives that tend to follow predictable formulas, classics challenge us to draw connections and contemplate deeper meanings, offering a more rewarding reading experience.

7. Inspiration for Creativity

The creativity sparked by classical literature extends far beyond the written word. Countless films, plays, and contemporary books draw on the themes, characters, and plots of classical works. Understanding these original narratives can enrich our appreciation for modern adaptations and inspire our creative endeavors. Whether through screenwriting, storytelling, or simply engaging in thoughtful discussions, the influence of classical literature can be a wellspring of inspiration.

In Conclusion: A Journey Worth Taking

Reading classical literature is more than an academic exercise; it is a journey of exploration, reflection, and growth. These timeless works hold a mirror to our humanity, offering profound insights into our lives and the world we inhabit. As we turn each page, we connect not only with the past but also with our present selves, reinforcing that literature—at its core—is a dialogue that transcends time.
