What Is the Grammar Stage?
The Grammar stage is the first phase of the classical Trivium, designed for students ages 8–11 who are ready to build strong academic foundations. At this stage, students absorb knowledge, develop study habits, and begin engaging with great literature, history, and writing in a structured, mentor-guided environment.
What Your Student Will Learn
In GCE’s Grammar program, students develop foundational skills in reading comprehension, writing, history, and hands-on science through twice-weekly live mentor-led discussions. Classes are shorter and focused, building attention and academic confidence at a pace that respects how young learners naturally grow.
What Does a Grammar Year Look Like?
A typical Grammar year at GCE is built around twice-weekly, live mentor-led discussions — shorter sessions designed specifically for the attention span and energy of younger learners. Students work through age-appropriate history, classic literature, and foundational writing, guided by a mentor who knows them by name. Between sessions, they complete reading and light written work that builds study habits gradually and without overwhelm.
Sample topics and texts include ancient world history, Aesop’s Fables, Charlotte’s Web, Greek and Roman mythology, introduction to writing sentences and short paragraphs, and narration exercises. Science and nature study are woven throughout — students develop observation skills, learn to record findings in their own words, and build the habits of inquiry that strong scientific thinkers depend on. Every subject is woven together in a way that makes learning feel like discovery rather than schoolwork. By the end of the Grammar stage, students have read widely, developed genuine curiosity, and built the academic foundation the Dialectic stage requires.
