Classical Upper Elementary Education Beginning at Age 8

In the Grammar stage, our focus is on developing the essential tools that will make us effective speakers, thinkers, writers, and researchers. Building these foundational skills early on ensures a smoother transition to higher levels of learning and helps us navigate life more confidently. When we practice the basics consistently, they become second nature—like riding a bike—allowing us to perform these skills effortlessly. Once these tools become automatic, we can concentrate fully on the task or problem at hand without being bogged down by the mechanics of how to do it.

Why discussion based learning?

Building teamwork skills is an important part of a student’s development, especially during the Grammar stage. It helps students learn how to collaborate effectively, communicate clearly, respect others’ ideas, and work toward common goals. Through group activities, discussions, and projects, students develop essential social skills such as listening, sharing, problem-solving together, and supporting their peers. These experiences foster a sense of community and prepare students to work successfully in more complex team environments in the future.

What Students Learn in the Grammar Stage

Students in the Grammar stage learn the foundational (age-appropriate) core elements of several essential skills:

-Using the classical trivium to discuss various subjects.
-Writing, editing, and refining stories and papers.
-Using the scientific method for research and conducting experiments.
-Gathering facts for a project and effectively sorting and organizing data.
-Understanding what constitutes a valid source and how to cite sources properly.
-Developing confidence in speaking to others, as well as giving and receiving both positive and constructive feedback.
-Learning to work as a team.

These skills lay the groundwork for more advanced learning and help students become confident, competent thinkers and communicators.

01

Reading and Literature

Throughout the Grammar stage, we will read exciting books and explore the history behind the stories, as well as examine the character traits of the main characters. We will discuss questions like: Can we relate to these characters? How are they the same or different from us? This approach encourages students to connect personally with the stories.

02

Writing and Composition

We dive into learning how to write a story from a text source, photos and our own imagination. Throughout this process, we learn to create a Keyword Outline to organize our ideas, check our grammar for clarity and correctness, and “dress up” (polish) our stories to make them engaging and captivating for our audience.

03

History and Humanities

Through the study of literature, geography, art, and music, we gain access to the exciting adventure of history from around the world. These subjects allow us to explore different cultures, learn about the diverse backgrounds of many people, and discover the fascinating stories of their adventures.

04

Logic Foundations

Logic puzzles and short mysteries encourage brain development by enhancing critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail. They challenge students to analyze information carefully, make connections, and think creatively to find solutions. Engaging with these puzzles helps develop a sharp, inquisitive mind and fosters perseverance as students work through complex problems.

How the Grammar Stage Is Delivered Online

In our online program, the Grammar Stage combines live instruction with independent work to create a flexible, engaging learning experience. While also providing young students with a consistent academic structure while offering families flexibility in how they organize their week. We meet twice a week for two hours each day, with an optional third day for Grammar 2 and 3.

Grammar 1 is designed for the student and parent to work together, fostering collaboration and guided learning. Grammar 2 and 3 can be completed independently or with involvement from both student and parent, depending on the family’s preference.

Live Online Classes Twice Per Week

Students participate in a live online environment via Zoom, engaging with a class of up to 12 peers. They follow a weekly agenda for self-paced homework, with the support and guidance of a parent. Each week’s assignments, reading, and writing expectations are clearly outlined and rooted in classical methodology.

Our online format helps students develop discipline, attention, and strong foundational academic habits—without placing the burden on parents to create daily lesson plans.
