Is Homeschooling Legal in Ohio?

Yes — and it just got simpler. In 2023, Ohio passed House Bill 33, which streamlined home education and removed the old red tape. Under the current law:

• File one notice of intent. Send a home education notification to your district superintendent by August 30 each year (or within five days of starting mid-year).
• The form is short. It lists the parent’s name and address, the child’s name, and an assurance that your child will be taught the required subjects. Nothing more is required to exempt your child from compulsory attendance.
• No assessment requirement. Ohio no longer requires standardized testing or a portfolio/academic assessment review. That obligation is gone.
