This course introduces students to the study of Latin as a foundation for language mastery and intellectual development. Through the systematic study of vocabulary, grammar, and syntax, students gain a deeper understanding of how language works, strengthening their skills in reading, writing, and comprehension.

Particular emphasis is placed on Latin’s role in shaping the English language. Students explore roots, prefixes, and suffixes derived from Latin, enabling them to expand vocabulary, improve spelling, and better understand complex texts across disciplines. The study of Latin grammar also reinforces principles of structure and clarity that support effective communication in English and other languages.

In keeping with the classical tradition, students engage with simple passages, translation exercises, and memorization, cultivating attention to detail, discipline, and precision in thought. By the end of the course, students will have developed stronger language skills, a richer vocabulary, and a greater appreciation for the linguistic heritage of Western civilization.
