Deep Dive into the 5-Paragraph Essay
A 4-Hour Writing Workshop for Ages 12+

In this engaging and interactive writing class, students will take a deeper dive into the structure and strategy of the classic 5-paragraph essay. Designed for middle school writers, this workshop goes beyond the basics to help students understand why strong essays work and how to make their writing more powerful, organized, and persuasive.

Students will learn how to craft an effective introduction using techniques such as the attention getter (hook), background information, and exordium—the art of drawing readers into the topic and establishing credibility. The class will also explore how to develop strong thesis statements, organize body paragraphs with clear topic sentences and supporting details, and write thoughtful conclusions that leave a lasting impression.

Throughout the workshop, students will:

  • Analyze the structure of a well-written essay
  • Practice writing engaging hooks and introductions
  • Learn the purpose of the exordium in persuasive and academic writing
  • Build stronger body paragraphs using evidence and commentary
  • Improve transitions and essay flow
  • Strengthen editing and revision skills
  • Participate in guided writing exercises and collaborative discussion

By the end of the class, students will have a clearer understanding of essay organization and the confidence to write more effectively in academic settings.
