Essay Writing Basics: Building Strong Paragraphs & Comparison Charts
A 4-Hour Writing Workshop for Ages 12+
This fun and interactive writing workshop introduces students to the foundations of essay writing in a clear, step-by-step format designed especially for middle school learners. Students will learn the essential parts of a basic essay while developing the skills needed to organize ideas, compare topics, and communicate clearly in writing.
During the class, students will explore the structure of a simple 5-paragraph essay, including introductions, body paragraphs, and conclusions. Special focus will be placed on learning how to use a comparison chart (graphic organizer) to brainstorm and organize ideas before writing. Students will practice comparing and contrasting topics, identifying similarities and differences, and turning organized notes into complete paragraphs.
Topics covered include:
- The basic structure of a 5-paragraph essay
- Writing clear topic and concluding sentences
- Brainstorming and organizing ideas
- Using a comparison chart to plan writing
- Understanding compare-and-contrast writing
- Creating strong supporting details and examples

By the end of the workshop, students will understand how to organize their thoughts, use comparison charts effectively, and write a structured basic essay with greater confidence.
