Our Rhetoric Stage Programs

Classical homeschool programs for ages 14–18 focused on persuasive communication, synthesis of ideas, and confident intellectual expression.

What Is the Rhetoric Stage?

The Rhetoric stage is the final phase of the classical Trivium, designed for students ages 14–18 who are ready to bring everything together — logic, analysis, and communication — into mature, confident expression. At this stage, students don’t just study great ideas; they learn to defend them.

What Your Student Will Learn

In GCE’s Rhetoric program, students engage in extended weekly discussions focused on persuasive writing, thesis development, advanced literature, and Socratic dialogue. Mentors guide students toward independent scholarship and articulate expression — the skills that carry them confidently into college and beyond.

What Does a Rhetoric Year Look Like?

A typical Rhetoric year at GCE centers on weekly mentor-led seminars — longer, more demanding sessions that reflect the academic pace students will encounter in college. Students read challenging primary texts from history, philosophy, and literature, write formal essays and persuasive arguments, and engage in Socratic dialogue that pushes their thinking further than a textbook ever could.

Sample topics and texts include the works of Aristotle, Augustine, and C.S. Lewis, primary source historical documents, classical rhetoric and persuasion theory, and advanced composition. The program builds from Rhetoric 1 (ages 14+) through Rhetoric 4 (ages 17+), with each level deepening the skills of the previous year. Students graduate from GCE’s Rhetoric stage having written more, argued better, and read more widely than most of their college peers already have.

Is the Rhetoric Stage Right for My Student?

If your student is 14 or older and ready to move from understanding ideas to defending them, the Rhetoric stage is the natural next step — whether they’re coming from GCE’s Dialectic program or joining from another curriculum. Students who thrive here are readers who enjoy debate, capable writers willing to be challenged, and young people who want to take their education seriously. Placement is flexible: a free discovery call helps us find the right level for exactly where your student is.

What GCE Families Are Saying

“I was skeptical that an online program could actually teach my 16-year-old to write persuasively. By the end of the year she had written essays that rivaled what I saw in college prep courses. The mentors push them — in the best possible way.”

“Our son has always been smart but struggled to organize and defend his ideas. GCE’s Rhetoric program gave him a framework and the confidence to use it. He’s now the kid in the room who speaks up — and people listen.”
